Your guide to happy and healthy bearded dragons

Welcome to Desert Dragon's comprehensive care guide. Here, you'll find everything you need to know to provide the best possible home for your new companion, from habitat setup to daily nutrition.

Understanding your bearded dragon's essential needs

The most crucial aspect of bearded dragon care involves providing a meticulously controlled environment. This includes a spacious enclosure, precise thermal gradients, high-output UVB lighting, and an age-appropriate omnivorous diet. Failing to meet these fundamental requirements can lead to serious health issues for your pet.

Habitat and enclosure setup

For an adult bearded dragon, a minimum 4x2x2 foot (120-gallon) wooden or glass vivarium is essential. Use a deep layer of play sand or an arid soil mix as substrate; never use wood chips, as they can cause fatal intestinal blockages if swallowed. Ensure the enclosure includes sturdy climbing branches and rock hides at both the warm and cool ends to allow your dragon to self-regulate its temperature.

Heating and lighting essentials

Maintaining the correct thermal gradient is vital. The basking spot, created by an overhead heat lamp, should be 38–42°C (100–107°F). The cool end of the enclosure should remain at 22–25°C (71–77°F). At night, allow temperatures to drop naturally to around 15°C (59°F) with all lights off. Install a 10% or 12% linear UVB T5 bulb overlapping the basking zone and remember to replace UVB bulbs every 12 months, as their invisible rays degrade over time, even if the light still appears to be working.
